VirtualBox installation breaks Google Chrome

Have you found that Google Chrome suddenly has no internet access, even though Internet Explorer (and other browsers) work fine?

I had this exact issue today. While I am behind a corporate proxy, I was perplexed as to why Internet Explorer worked fine, but Chrome didn’t, especially knowing that they both used the same proxy settings!

The issue affects both Windows 7 and Windows 8 / 8.1, and was resolved by disabling the VirtualBox Host-Only Network adapter.

To do this, go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections then right click on VirtualBox Host-Only Network and click Disable.

Hopefully this saves a few of you from losing (more) handfuls of hair!
